After about a month or two of wedding planning, I realized that planning a wedding is truly a league of it's own. If you're like most brides, your priorities shift. Suddenly picking out aspects of your weddings seem like you're making the most important decisions of your life. Of course I'm exaggerating a bit, but I certainly know of brides who have come close to losing their minds trying to find the perfect venue/dress/cake/whatever. For me, picking my color palette, normally thought to be a HUGE wedding planning decision, was a no-brainer. I combined some of Matt and I's favorite colors (yes, we are twenty-somethings who have favorite colors), considered our theme and venue, and searched Pinterest for some extra inspiration.
If you're a bride who's yet to deal with the color-palette dilemma, I've listed some suggestions on how to pick the ideal color palette for your big day. These are merely suggestions that I've learned through out this planning process, NOT hard-fast rules you absolutely need to follow. I also added lots of inspiration palettes because, well...they're pretty. And what bride-to-be doesn't love a pretty color palette?
If you haven't picked your color palette yet, here are my suggestions...
1. Consider your theme/style: When deciding on the central colors for your wedding, it's important to consider the style and "theme" for your wedding. If you are planning a dramatic, evening, black-tie affair, light pastels probably won't fit the feeling you are trying to convey. Likewise, my vintage-chic wedding wouldn't have looked cohesive if I would have picked "loud" colors like bright reds, oranges, or bright blues. Colors really help tie your wedding together, as they are incorporated into every main element of the day.
2. Consider the venue: I highly recommend choosing your venue before choosing your color palette, for many reasons. For those ladies lucky enough to pick a "blank slate" venue (it can be decorated for any style, theme, etc.), you can most likely pull off any color palette of your choosing. Most of us aren't that lucky, and have to choose our color palette based on the space where the wedding and reception will take place. For example, the church where your ceremony is taking place might be covered in bright red carpet or funky-colored wall coverings. This might make your purple-and-yellow dream wedding a visual nightmare. While I'm all about pulling off whatever your heart desires, it's important to know what kind of space you are dealing with before settling on your color palette.
3. Consider the season: While most color palettes can work any time of the year, there are some that can be tough to pull off depending on the season. As mentioned above, the fall color palette is super popular in the autumn months for obvious reasons. I have yet to see a yellow, orange, brown, and maroon wedding be well-executed during the spring but I would love to see it work! Same for a red-and-green wedding. There are certain color palettes that can work year-round, though, and look fabulous in any season...
4. Stay true to you! If you fall head-over-heels for a color palette but it goes against every single one of my above suggestions...do it anyway. At the end of all the planning and preparation, it's YOUR wedding day, no one else's. If you are happy with what you chose and feel like it represents you + your fiancé's style, then nothing else matters.
I would love to hear how YOU picked your color palette and whether you were a wedding color palette rule breaker!
